VALU THE WILD BULL
Directed by Umesh Vinayak KULKARNI, INDIA, 2008 With: Atul Kulkarni, Bharti Achrekar, Mohan Agashe
Synopsis: “Try to catch me, cage me, but remember you have chosen the impossible task, as I am the spirit Free!” Valu is a story set in a small remote village of Kusavade, in the interiors of Maharashtra. The village tradition of letting loose a bull in God’s name has resulted in dire consequences! “Valu”, is actually a holy, consecrated bull which is the responsibility of the village. It is allowed to roam free. But lately, Valu became aggressive and is blamed for every single act of chaos and destruction that happens in and around the village. A forest officer is called from the city to catch the bull… Catching the bull will become equivalent to establishing power in the village for the leaders and for those who are interested in the fringe benefits… A complex yet hilarious allegory, Valu is the debut film of Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni, alumni of FTII, Pune. In 2005 he made GIRNI: the Grinding Machine, which travelled widely and won many national and international awards. His films are deeply rooted in his culture, yet have universal essence and present-day world vision.Valu won many awards and Aurofilm presented it in its Indian Panorama in 2009. Umesh Kulkarni will be with us and there will be Q&A after the film. All are welcome!
