We went back to the sixties when these vintage cars rolled into Pondy!

Every year, when the Heritage Car Rally rolls into town, Beach Road is abuzz with the sound of selfies being clicked. Automobile enthusiasts, shutterbugs, tourists, casual strollers on the beach and the perpetually curious all turn up not only to examine but also pose in front of the vintage beauties paraded on the Promenade.

The Pondicherry Photograpy Club (PPC) organised a photo walk to capture these antique cars in all their glory on Saturday evening when they were exhibited on Beach Road, before they returned to Chennai on Sunday morning.

The classic cars are preserved painstakingly by members of the Madras Heritage Motoring Club, who organise the event annually with the Department of Tourism, Puducherry. For the 60 vintage cars that made the 160 km ride along the East Coast Road from Chennai to Pondicherry, it was a test of endurance and for their owners who invest oodles of time, money, passion and patience in their maintenance , it was a moment of pride. The models on display included  Chevrolet, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Ford Prefect, Citroen, Dodge, and a 1920’s Austin .

There is a nostalgic air about the Promenade which makes these vintage cars dating from the 1920’s to 1970’s fit right in as if they belong there!
