Summary :

Pondicherry received a total of 3 cm (30 mm) rainfall from the morning of December 9- December 10 morning. according to IMD . The city was on a red alert earlier and expected to receive 100- 200 mm rainfall.

There were strong winds but no significant damages or incidents reported, All India Radio reported.

Power supply was interrupted in many areas especially in and around Lawspet- some neighbourhoods waited till 12 noon and late afternoon/ evening for power to be restored, according to PondyLive readers.

Cyclonic storm Mandous crossed the Tamil Nadu coast near Mahabalipuram between 11.30 pm on December 9 to 1.30 am on December 10.
It has now weakened into a  deep depression and will soon weaken into a depression by noon.

Light to moderate rain may fall in Pondy today with chances of isolated heavy rainfall

Wind speed will gradually decrease from this morning . Sea condition may be rough till afternoon.

Traffic and transport : Buses will not run on ECR 2-3 hours hours before and after the cyclone crosses the coast

Schools and Colleges: Holiday declared for schools and colleges in Pondy and Karaikal on Dec 9 and 10 on account of #CycloneMandous

  • 8-10 houses washed away in Pillaichavady coast near Kalapet, according to reports from The Hindu and New Indian Express. This area is prone to severe sea erosion and some of the houses were uninhabited and in a dilapidated condition according to reports.
  • Electricity department is pruning branches in Lawspet and Saram and other areas especially those near power lines as a preventive measure; there were power cuts during this exercise

 

Collector orders removal of all unauthorised banners to prevent injury/ damage during cyclone: District Collector E.Vallavan evoked Section 144 of CPC to order removal of unauthorised banners, hoardings, flex boards, advertisements poles on the roadside as these could endanger public safety during the cyclonic storm. Organisations/ individuals/politiical parties cannot erect any such banners or cut outs on the roadside without prior permission and would be penalised /liable for criminal action .

Response Teams: 3 NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) teams for assistance in Puducherry

Relief Centres : 163 relief centres set up

Flooding countermeasure : PWD equipped with water pumps for pumping out water in case of flooding in low-lying areas

Fishermen warning : Directorate of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare Puducherry issued an advisory on December 6 asking fishermen not to venture into the sea till further orders.

 

HOW TO STAY SAFE DURING A CYCLONE

  1. Charge your mobile phone, power banks etc. Ensure candles/ emergency lights in case of power cuts.
  2. Keep doors and windows shut during the cyclone; secure any loose objects in your building.
  3. Stay indoors till it is officially announced the cyclone has passed. Winds may die down and there may be a calm when the ‘eye of the storm’ passes over after which winds may grow in intensity again .
  4. Keep important documents in a safe place .
  5. Do not venture near the beach/ shore or to your terrace out of curiosity or to take photos etc
  6. Stock essentials like bread, milk and groceries for 2 days
  7. Follow official announcements & trusted news sources. Do not forward rumours/ unverified WhatsApp messages.
