Why the local lockdown?

Total lockdown for entire cities have not been effective in containing the coronavirus. They may also affect wages of daily labourers and have adverse effects on the local economy.

The “localised lockdown” will contain the disease within a defined geographic area by early detection of cases, breaking the chain of transmission and preventing its spread to new areas .” : District Collector T Arun, Press statement

The Primary Health Centre (PHC) for that area will set up fever clinics and conduct surveillance

How are the local lockdown areas decided:

The local lockdown areas in Pondicherry have been decided based on these factors:

  • Total Positive Cases in an area
  • Doubling rate : this is the rate at which Covid-19 cases in an area double (10- 20-40 etc)
  • Positivity rate : Number of cases in an area / Number of samples tested in the area * 100 (Pondicherry’s daily positivity rate has recently fluctuated between 30- 43 percent )
  • Fatality rate: Number of people dying due to Covid in an area
  • Population density: Population per square km- areas with denser population have higher spread due to lack of social distancing etc
