Government must prove majority in floor test in Puducherry on Feb 22

Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy will have to prove his Government enjoys a majority in a floor test in the Puducherry Legislative Assembly on February 22.

Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan who was sworn in on Thursday ordered the floor test after Opposition Leader N. Rangasamy submitted a letter stating the government has lost its majority and must prove it on the Assembly Floor. A  press release issued by the Lt Governor notes that proceedings must conclude by 5 pm on Monday and cannot be delayed/ suspended or adjourned at any cost.
Voting will take place by showing of hands. Proceedings will be recorded on video.

A total of 4 Congress MLAs have resigned since this January. This has left the Congress & the Opposition with 14 members each ( 3 from the BJP are nominated ) in the house. The numbers of the Assembly are now as follows:

POLITICAL CRISIS

This has been a politically dramatic week in Puducherry.

To recap, Health Minister Malladi Krishna Rao resigned his seat in the house on Monday; MLA John Kumar quit on Tuesday not long before Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Puducherry on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Kiran Bedi was removed as the Lt Governor of Puducherry on Tuesday and Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan was sworn into office as the new Lt Governor of Puducherry (additional charge) on Thursday. Chief Minister Narayanasamy has to prove his government enjoys majority on the floor of the Legislative Assembly before 5 pm on Monday, February 22. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive on  February 25.

The Chief Minister has alleged the recent developments are an attempt by the BJP to topple the ruling Congress government in Puducherry.
The Lt Governor has ordered officials to ensure law and order arrangements in the Union Territory during the floor test in Puducherry on Monday.
