Slithering Cures : Snakes and Antivenins in South India is an art installation resulting from a collaboration between artists and researchers, hosted by the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) from February 1- 11. Entry is free for visitors.
Snakebite is a major but neglected cause of death and disability in developing countries. India is severely affected, with around 40,000 deaths per year, mostly among people living in poor, rural areas. In the fight against this public health problem, antivenom production plays a crucial role. This involves capturing snakes in the wild and extracting their venom, a task mostly carried out by the Irula Snake Catchers Cooperative in Tamil Nadu.
The tour of the installation is guided by a specialist in regional flora and fauna. Themes such as the relationship between humans and nature, the health implications of pharmaceutical production, the place of the snake in Indian cultural history, international public health policies, snakebite prevention, etc. are addressed
