How has Pondicherry influenced your book ?
My novel is set in Pondicherry as I felt I should share with others the knowledge I have of its history. I have lived in Pondicherry for more than 50 years and I have written about what I have witnessed. My book has the insider’s point of view. In fact, Pondicherrians will enjoy this book more than others because they will be familiar with the places and characters.

On Publishing and Promoting a book
It was indeed difficult to find a publisher. So I decided to publish the book myself. I have found that one can use social media to promote a book but it’s not easy because people don’t read as much as they did. I ask every satisfied reader to recommend it to a friend. One has to find new ways to market one’s books. Even the most successful writers do it.

On the Pondicherry Book Club
I have noticed that even those who used to read a lot have stopped reading because they have started watching videos and movies on YouTube, Netflix etc. I started the Pondicherry Book Club to promote books written in English, French and Tamil.  We meet once a month and always at a different location. Some sessions are open to the public. To join the club you have to send me an email ( sunayana.panda@gmail.com )

AVANI PATEL

Living Lights (Poetry)

Avani Patel Author of Living Lights Poetry anthology in Pondicherry

A semi-autobiographical anthology, Living Lights,  is a medley of poems, haikus and musings. It is the product of mistakes made, experiences lived, losses endured, and an occasional victory gained. While each poem reveals a little snippet about Avani, she imagines you will see a piece of yourself along the way too !

How did Pondicherry influence your book ?

Pondicherry managed to stir me from my stupor. I have been a lifelong devotee of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo and when I arrived here in October 2018, I was certain of only my faith and nothing else. Pondicherry imbued me with happiness, comfort and safety – all of which were essential in order for me to begin the writing process. I have always loved language and word play but I suppose, I never really loved myself enough to put pen to paper. Until last year. Emotionally, physically and spiritually I felt like for the first time I was whole, happy, and unafraid to revisit past memories and experiences.

On Getting Published

Getting the book published wasn’t particularly hard as there are plenty of self-publishing companies out there – some better than others! I am particularly thrilled that a traditional publishing house had taken interest in my book and wanted to publish it for free, which acted as a sign of validation for me.

On Public Poetry Readings

Getting your book ‘out’ there is tougher as there are so many books in all types of genres being published every day.  I promoted my book via the usual social media forums and reached out to family and friends – all of whom have been incredibly supportive. I did a live poetry reading in Auroville which was a somewhat nerve-wracking and vulnerable experience as it involved sharing deeply personal writing with an audience. But it turned out equally delightful as I connected with many wonderful writers that evening! I grew more confident and went on to perform at a local open mic night and later had my official book launch at the Aura Bookstore.

THORVI DAMLE

In Two Minds? How Tarot can help you decide (Self Help )

Thorvi Damle author of In Two Minds Tarot Pondicherry

Through her years of tarot practice, Thorvi was often asked the same questions by people who were curious, intrigued or skeptical. She decided to answer them in a book that focuses on tarot as a tool in decision-making.  The author looks beyond the smoke and mirrors and explores the role tarot can play at excelling in work or relationships and removing the stress surrounding major life decisions.

How did Pondy influence your book ?

I grew up in Pondy and studied here till graduation after which I lived in various cities and travelled the world. Last year,  I quit my corporate job and moved back to Pondy. The energy of Pondy is unmatched and my soul is tied here- no other place is home. I got the inspiration to write this book only once I moved back and the entire journey of writing, editing, publishing & the launch took place here.

On bringing a vision to fruition

I have a blog and a podcast but a book was a different beast. I invested in a mentor & publisher, Geetika Saigal, who guided me on the method to the madness that is writing a book. I had a vision of how the book should look, feel, read and how the launch should take place. It was challenging to explain it to others and so I ended up having to design, plan and execute all of it from the cover image to the virtual and physical book launches. It was simultaneously exciting and exhausting, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

On cultivating a reading culture

I remember visiting the Romain Rolland Library as a kid and being excited about the next book to read. Other fond memories include visiting the book fairs at the Chamber of Commerce building and walking out holding a dozen books. I think inviting authors for book signings, organising book clubs and book readings can get people of all age groups more involved in reading.

Advice for writers and aspiring authors

“For the young who are starting out- find a good self-publishing company. First improve your writing style because a badly written book will not sell- to write well, read a lot.” – Sunayana Panda

“Go for it ! If you have an idea, a concept or a story there is no use sitting over it. Just begin. Invest in a writing coach as following a method with discipline is key. Publishing a book is a long journey, so having someone to guide you is always a plus . Lastly take in the inspirational energy of Pondicherry, no other city is so charged up for potential of new creation.”  – Thorvi Damle

“If I can realise my dream of publishing a book at the age of 45, you can do it too! What are you waiting for? Just write, write and keep writing whenever or wherever inspiration strikes. Getting the words down is the biggest challenge – the tweaking and perfecting can always be done later. Surround yourself with positivity and believe in your writing. Because if you don’t, how can you expect others to? Do your research when it comes to choosing the right publishing company and speak to other authors who have already gone through the process. – Avani Patel
