One week lockdown for 19 streets in these containment zones in Pondicherry

The District administration has identified 19 containment zones in Pondicherry for a local lockdown from September 21- September 27. These streets/ areas have been identified by the Health Department due to higher proportion of active Covid-19 cases.

Why some streets are locked down ?

Earlier this month, the decision to lockdown 32 areas in Pondicherry was put on hold after objections were raised that the lockdown would affect thousands of families economically. Now, specific streets and neighbourhoods are contained on a weekly basis based on the number of cases in that area. The areas under containment change on a weekly basis.

This allows the health department to test persons inside these zones, break the chain of transmission of the virus and at the same time ensure economy of the entire city does not come to a standstill.

When is the local area lockdown :

From September 21- September 27

What is allowed and not allowed in these areas :

  • All shops, establishments, industrial units, private offices will be closed in these areas
  • Vegetable and grocery shops can be open from 6 am – 12 noon only
  • Government offices , hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, milk booths  in these areas are exempt from lockdown restrictions

Testing in Containment Zones

Active house-to-house surveillance and testing of all the persons within the containment zones will be carried out by the concerned Primary Health Centres (PHC) who will also set up fever clinics in the area.

Restriction on Movement 

  • All vehicular movement, including public transport will be stopped. Except for permitted essential services.
  • In the case of a prominent road passing through the containment zone, vehicles passing through will be allowed to ply on the road.
  • All roads including rural roads connecting the zone will be guarded by Police.
  • People from outside containment zones will not be allowed inside except for essentials like purchasing groceries etc
  • People in the containment zones will not be permitted outside the zone during the week except for essential services, medical emergencies and movement of government servants.
  • Perimeter of the containment zone will be demarcated considering number and size of the containment houses, geographical characteristics of the area and ability to ensure basic infrastructure and essential services, according to a press release issued by District Collector T. Arun

  2. Thirukanur : Koonichampet- Pillayarkoil Street
  3. Mudaliarpet: Bharathi Mill Street 
  4. Nellithoppe: 1st Cross, Murugan Koil Back Side 
  5. Ariyankuppam: Ragava Chettiyar Street 
  6. Mettupalayam: Shanmugapuram- Nillaya Street 
  7. Bahour : Kuruvinatham- North Street 
  8. Odiansalai: Nehru Nagar- Main Street 
  9. Katterikuppam: Mettu Street 
  10. Katterikuppam: Amman Nagar 
  11. Kosapalayam: New Saram -North Street 
  12. Abhishegapakkam: Kamarajar Street 
  13. Abhishegapakkam: Ambedkar Nagar 
  14. Abhishegapakkam: Pudunagar 
  15. TN Palayam: Thoppu Street 
  16. TN Palayam: Pudunagar 
  17. Lawspet: Ashok Nagar- Bharathidasan Street
  18. Lawspet: Jeevananthapuram – MGR Street 
  19. Lawspet: Sankaradas Swamigal Nagar – 1st Cross 

 

Any violation of the restrictions are punishable under provisions of Disaster Management Act, 2005 and Epidemic Act, 1897.

Health Department has also appealed to people to co-operate during door-door surveillance , especially if there are elderly at home or those with co-morbidities
